Banana blossom, which is the flower of banana plant, also called banana heart occasionally, is an edible fruit widely used as a vegetable in most South Asian and Southeast Asian countries. Here is the Thai version of canned banana blossom in brine. As a vegetable, banana flower is used as a popular ingredient in Thai, Filipino and Vietnamese soups and salads. It is used either steamed or cooked or even raw in these countries. In South India, a dry curry dish called ‘Thoran’ prepared using banana blossom flowers is very popular, especially in the state of Kerala.
